Paul Drinkhall - ITTF World's Junior Champion
21 September 2006, 21:54

England’s Paul Drinkhall, the European Cadet Boys’ Singles champion in 2005, won his first ever Boys’ Singles title on the ITTF World Junior Circuit when he beat Austria’s Stefan Fegerl in close seven games encounter at the Funchal Junior Open on Thursday 24th August 2006.

Paul Drinkhall won 9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8; it was his second title of the day having won the Boys’ Doubles crown with Darius Knight earlier in the evening when once again Stefan Fegerl had been the player to suffer. In the Boys’ Doubles final, Paul Drinkhall and Darius Knight beat Stefan Fegerl and Martin Storf 13-11, 11-5, 11-7.

Attitude
The comment reflects the positive attitude of the English pair who had clearly given matters some careful thought. “We tried to return short services with short touch returns and not flicks”, continued Darius Knight. “They wanted us to flick the returns so they could topspin the ball; Martin Storf is particularly good at counter topspin play.”

A mature approach and one that secured the Boys’ Doubles title for England, Paul Drinkhall and Darius Knight were the champions and for the former he completed the two days of the Funchal Junior Open unbeaten in either doubles or singles, a fine performance.

Silver Medal for Paul Drinkhall and Darius Knight
31 July 2006, 12:43

30th July 2006, Sarajevo, Bosnia-Hercegovina.

European Youth Championships 2006

Paul Drinkhall and Darius Knight faced Stanislav Golovanov and Mikhail Paykov of Russia in the Junior Boys Doubles European Youth Championships Final, it was to be no fairy tale ending however, right from the beginning the English boys had tremendous difficulty returning the Russian Serves, first game went to the Russian pair but Paul and Darius regrouped and won the next two but the problems with the Russian serves if anything got worse, in the fourth the Russian pair took a 10-8 lead and although one set point was retrieved there was no return. 2-2 in sets. The English pair started well in the fifth going 3-1 up but two Russian serves dumped into the net brought it back to 3-3. The Russians were never headed after that, serving superbly they closed out the Gold medal 11-6 in the fifth set.

Special mentions also for David Meads who picked up a Bronze Medal in the Junior Boys Singles Consolation losing in 5 sets to eventual champion Vincent Baubet of France and Naomi Owen of Wales who won gold in the Junior Girls Singles Consolation final beating Angeliki Papadiki of Greece.

Brentwood TT League -Tournament Report 2006
21 July 2006, 22:09

Tournament - Season 2005-6

A fitting climax to the season came with the completion of the League's Annual Closed Tournament at The Peniel Academy Sports Hall on the weekend of Saturday 22nd April 2006 and Sunday 23rd.

The Men's Singles winner George Reeves enjoyed a fairly comfortable run to the final, defeating Mark Mulley, Nigel Lamb, Paul Cuming in the rounds and Charles Sweeney in the final.   Cuming took the first end in their Semi-Final 11/9 but Reeves took the next three to progress to the final where he again lost an end to team colleague Sweeney who had reached the final with wins over Trevor Carter, Trevor Collin and Dave Finlayson.

The Veterans Over 40's was a second title for Reeves as he defeated Dave Kirston, Keith Spicer and George Pavitt in the Semi-Final before claiming a four end win over John Gagg 11/9, 10/12, 11/7, 11/4.  The Handicap Singles provided a win for Trevor Carter (-15) who came through a difficult half defeating Joyce Bassett (-2) 21/18, 16/21, 21/9  followed by victory over Alan Arnold (-15) 21/16, 21/18  Carter then met and defeated Nigel Lamb (-16) in the Semi-Final 14/21, 22/20, 21/12 and proceded to win the title by inflicting a three end defeat on Keith Spicer (-17) 8/21, 21/13, 21/10. - Spicer had reached the final with wins over Caroline Cole (+1), Keith Ashton (-14) and Sue Hickman (-9).

The Veterans Over 60's winner was George Pavitt who reached the final by defeating last years titleholder Ev Lucas 8/11, 11/6, 11/8, 13/11 - Pavitt then defeated Dave Carter in three before overcoming Keith Ashton in the final.  Ashton having forced his way past two club colleagues Alf Fox 4/11, 11/5, 10/12, 11/9, 11/7 and Dave Kirston in the Semi-Final.

The Ladies Singles winner was Sue Hickman whose win was her third success, having previous wins in 1996 and 1997 - Sue defeated Caroline Cole to claim her title.

The Doubles event was as expected won by the pairing of  Reeves/Sweeney but not before a number of ends had slipped through their grasp. Their win over Kirston/Fox 11/7, 11/6, 9/11, 14/12 was followed with victory over Carter/Gagg and in the final over Arnold/Lamb - having to come from two ends ro one down 4/11, 11/4, 4/11, 11/4, 11/7.

The Team Handicap Event was almost a complete Mountnessing Club affair with Mark Alloway and John Hickey facing Dave Finlayson and Buttsbury's Caroline ColeAlloway (-1) faced Finlayson (-12) in the first singles and was successful 21/16, 21/10 - Hickey (-1) then played Cole (+1) and found his opponent in fine form with Cole winning 19/21, 21/10, 21/19 which left the title to be decided by the doubles encounter. Alloway/Hickey played off (-1) with Finlayson/Cole on (-6) - Alloway/Hickey prevailing in three ends 16/21, 21/15, 11/21.     An excellent occasion, well organised and presented by Sue and Phil Gower with all the facilities and comforts provided by the Peniel Academy courtesy of Mrs. Esther Coleman. source: brentwood_league
